Diamond Education The Do’s and Don’ts of Ring Maintenance

Congratulations! You’ve gotten engaged, had a wedding, enjoyed your honeymoon and now it’s time for your happily ever after. But there’s just one question…

How do you keep your bridal set looking new and beautiful?

We’ve seen plenty of customers spend hundreds or even thousands of dollars on unnecessary stone replacement  simply because they did not invest a little bit of time in ring maintenance. Here’s our advice to spending less and ensuring long-lasting stones and settings!

The Do’s and Don’t’s:

#1 Do bring your ring in every 6 months to have it cleaned and checked by a jewelry professional!

Our jewelers will examine your jewelry under magnification to look for prong wear or misplacement, loose stones, gallery and shank wear, and other structural problems that may compromise the security of your precious stones. This is a free service to anyone, regardless of where you purchased your jewelry!

Don’t leave your ring in home jewelry cleaners overnight or longer than recommended on the bottle.

In fact, some home jewelry cleaners can be harmful to certain jewelry, particularly certain gemstones, and it’s best to bring your ring to a professional to have it cleaned in our solution at no charge to you.

# 2 Do get an appraisal so that you can insure your jewelry in case of loss, theft, or damage.

For more information, check out our blog post on appraisals: https://www.hperryjewelers.com/do-i-need-an-appraisal/

Don’t get an appraisal from just anybody.

For your protection, it is best to have your appraisal written by an independent certified gemologist appraiser. For more information about our unbiased third party appraiser, Mark Cartwright, check out his website here: https://yourgemlab.com/

#3 Do take your rings off when you get home, and consider purchasing “travel jewelry” for when you go out of town.

Travel jewelry is costume jewelry that you don’t have to worry about damaging or losing. We carry a few lines of travel jewelry in our store that look just like fine jewelry, so no one will even have to know!

Don’t wear jewelry in the pool, hot tub, ocean, or while sleeping.

If you have any questions about how to best take care of your ring, feel free to come by the store anytime. We love talking to customers about jewelry, and we are more than happy to clean and check your rings while you’re in the store!
