BlogSeptember is 20% off sapphire jewelry month, right here at H Perry Jewelers!

Sapphire is undoubtedly one of the most recognizable of the precious gemstones. It’s dazzling blue color gives it away every time. It is also a popular stone as most people know it as the birthstone for the month of September and, for many, it will immediately bring to mind the late Princess Diana’s stunning engagement ring which now adorns the ring finger of Kate Middleton, the Duchess of Cambridge, the wife of Diana’s eldest son,William. This famous piece consists of a 12-carat oval blue sapphire at the centre of 14 solitaire white diamonds set in 18 karat white gold.

Famous sapphires have appeared throughout history, so it’s no surprise that the stone is so well known. Its association with royal engagements doesn’t stop with Princess Diana or Kate Middleton. Did you know that Napoléon’s Engagement Ring for Joséphine was also a sapphire paired with a diamond and was sold in 2013 for a million dollars?

But sapphires aren’t just for royalty or for wearing on special occasions – nor are they just for engagement rings. They are second only to diamonds in hardness so they wear extremely well as day-to-day jewelry. The sapphire, along with its big sister, the ruby, is a species of mineral known as “Corundum”. Corundum comes in many hues – including in “fancy” colors such as yellow, purple, orange and green – but the rich blue of the sapphire is perhaps the best loved color of them all. When set alongside one another, the sapphire’s deep blue makes any diamond pop. They were just made to go together!
